Construction Complete at Kwinana Lithium Hydroxide Refinery

SQMi and Wesfarmers Chemicals and Fertilisers are pleased to announce that Covalent has completed major construction at its lithium hydroxide refinery in Kwinana, marking a significant milestone in the development of a fully integrated lithium operation in Western Australia.

The achievement is the result of several years of engineering, planning and evaluation, and reflects the dedication, capability and focus of the entire project team and its delivery partners.

Covalent is now focused on finalizing commissioning activities and delivering first product, with an emphasis on meeting the stringent quality requirements for battery-grade lithium used in electric vehicles.

Once operational, the Kwinana refinery is expected to produce approximately 50,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year, contributing to the growing global demand for clean energy solutions.

Upstream, the Mt Holland mine and concentrator continue to ramp up positively, with production performance exceeding 80% of nameplate capacity in 2025. Engineering studies and work to secure environmental and regulatory approvals for a potential expansion of the site are also progressing well.

A final investment decision on the expansion is not expected in the 2025 calendar year. The expansion will continue to be considered by Covalent’s shareholders and remains subject to the lithium market context, completion of the relevant technical and financial evaluations and approvals and successful commissioning of the refinery.
